Taipei AMPA Going Strong in the Face of Economic Crisis

The 2009 Taipei International Auto Parts and Accessories Show (Taipei AMPA), a UFI (Global Association of the Exhibition Industry) recognized event, will be held from April 14 – 17 at the TWTC Nangang Exhibition Hall along with AutoTronics Taipei. Despite the economic climate, 1000 manufacturers will display their latest products at 2,600 separate booths. Leading Taiwanese automakers DEPO, Eagle Eyes Traffic, Sonar Auto Parts, Tong Hong, Gordon, and Just Auto have each reserved 330 m2 of exhibition space, as in the past. Foreign automakers from South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, and China, as well as nearly 200 companies from Japan, India, the US, Hong Kong, Singapore, Italy, and Australia will also be in attendance.

Exhibitors like Pan Minghsiung, vice president of leading after market automotive sheet metal parts Gordon, are confident about the industry’s prospects: “This year’s first quarter revenues will definitely be better than the fourth quarter of last year, and we are even more optimistic about the second quarter." Shen Guorong, chairman of leading transmission manufacturer Hota Industrial, stresses that “the US government will rescue the big three automakers, and force them to develop fuel efficient cars, hybrids, and other new models. We should see a gradual upturn in the second quarter, and as companies seek to reduce costs Asia’s parts suppliers will benefit.” With many auto makers and OEMs suffering, Taiwanese after market (AM) companies will see opportunities, and based on the response to this year’s Taipei AMPA, the organizer, Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) is optimistic about the future.

In response to the global recession, the MOEA Bureau of Foreign Trade is subsidizing business trip to Taiwan for major international buyers, and is even providing limousine and other perks for procurement teams from Audi and other major players. At present COMTEC Electronic GmbH (Germany), Federal Mogul (UK), Nissan Automobile (Japan) and Motrex (South Korea) are among the 400 foreign companies that have accepted travel subsidies to attend the exhibitions. The MOEA has also advised TAITRA to invite more buyers from emerging markets, and this year Brazil’s Agrale S.A. (annual sales US$300 million), Indonesia’s Kawan Lama Sejahtera (annual sales US$120 million), and Indian brake manufacturer Real Talent Engineering will all be in attendance, as will industry organizations from Japan, Korea, Kenya, Poland, and Chongqing (China).

The 2009 Taipei AMPA is staying abreast of global trends with this year’s theme “Rolling Towards a Greener Future” and a special “Green Power” exhibition area that will feature products that lower fuel consumption, reduce CO2 emissions, and increase engine efficiency. Guang Shin Global’s LED daytime running lights decrease energy use by 90% using high efficiency LED to replace halogen bulbs, and have been nominated for the 2010 European Union ECE R87 daytime running lamp Auto Parts Excellence Award. Stone Racing Design’s tailpipe for the Honda Fit increases horsepower by 7.3P and torque by 0.5kg, all while saving fuel. Yutai’s VBS brake vacuum pressure supply system can instantaneously increase the vacuum pressure in the booster when the engine fails, preserving brake system operation and decreasing fuel consumption. Daiyama’s wireless remote control shock absorbers use RFID wireless technology to remotely adjust the stiffness of the shock absorbers and increase performance. And Panrico’s titanium economizer uses aerospace technology and titanium’s heat exchange properties to maximize combustion efficiency, increasing horsepower, preventing carbon buildup, and reducing CO2 emissions.

The Taipei AMPA will also feature a series of technology and market related forums, new product release, and national pavilions.
